Karl Fredric Putnam was born March 28, 1879, to a prominent family in Mt. Carmel, Illinois–banker and attorney Samuel R. Putnam and Agatha Weinbach Putnam. Karl attended the Northwestern University Academy (preparatory school), graduating on June 13, 1899.
