Karl Fredric Putnam was born March 28, 1879, to a prominent family in Mt. Carmel, Illinois–banker and attorney Samuel R. Putnam and Agatha Weinbach Putnam. Karl attended the Northwestern University Academy (preparatory school), graduating on June 13, 1899. In the first decades of the twentieth century, formal dances comprised a significant component of the social life of Northwestern University students. Behavior at these formals followed relatively strict rules of etiquette.
